In January, I moved 9,102 miles away from home. It was the first time I had lived this far from my family in a land I’d not seen before.

Life in India was a bed of roses. We’re blessed with services at our doorstep. We’ve had two maids who took care of me and my husband when we moved to our first home in Gurgaon. They freed us from daily chores like cleaning and cooking.

The transition from kids to adults managing our first home together as newlyweds went smoothly because of the help available to us. Things got real when we moved to Jamaica early this year; it was time to buckle up and mature. We were no longer the pampered adults; we were now responsible for everything.

After five months of living as an expat, I realized how much my self-learned skills have saved me. They have helped me survive and live happily in a foreign land.

I learned these skills with no expectations whatsoever. However, they’re more useful than anything I learned in school. They help me live a good life as an expat despite the ups and downs of living in a new country.
